Here’s the honest version, from a coach who works with candidates going through this decision every week: the “best” test isn’t a fixed ranking — it depends entirely on what the score is actually for.

The one question that actually decides this: what is the score for?

Before comparing features, answer this: is the score going toward a university application, a government visa/immigration application, or a job/professional requirement? The answer changes everything, because acceptance rules — not test quality — are usually the real deciding factor.

• Government visa routes are the strictest. UK visa applications that require a Secure English Language Test (SELT) accept IELTS for UKVI specifically — not the Duolingo English Test, and not standard PTE Academic. Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) currently accepts IELTS only, no other test. If your score has to satisfy a government requirement, check the exact accepted-test list for that specific route before you book anything — this is the single most common expensive mistake candidates make.
• Universities vary school by school. Most major universities worldwide accept IELTS and TOEFL; a large and growing number now accept PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test too — but “most” isn’t “all,” and acceptance can even differ by department within the same university. How the four tests actually differ, honestly

TOEFL iBT — fully computer-based, historically strongest for US graduate school admissions specifically, with a more academic-lecture-style listening and reading format than the other three. If you’re applying to US universities, check whether they explicitly prefer TOEFL — some still do.

Duolingo English Test — fully online, taken at home on your own device, adaptive (the test gets harder or easier based on your answers), and by far the fastest and cheapest of the four. Acceptance has grown quickly for university admissions, but it’s the weakest of the four for government visa/immigration routes specifically — confirmed not accepted for Canada’s SDS, and only conditionally recognized for UK visa routes depending on the specific pathway.
