First, what Band 9 actually means

Band 9 isn't "perfect." It's natural.

A Band 9 speaker isn't flawless — they speak fluently and effortlessly, use a wide range of natural vocabulary, handle grammar with full flexibility, and are easy to understand throughout. The samples below show what that sounds like. But reading them is only half the job: you only improve when you speak your own version and find out where it actually lands.

Highlighted phrases are the Band 9 language — learn the pattern, not the script.

Band 9Part 1

"Do you enjoy cooking?"

I do, yeah — though I'd say it really depends on my mood. On a busy weekday I just throw something together, but at the weekend I genuinely enjoy taking my time over a proper meal. There's something quite therapeutic about it, actually — it's one of the few things that takes my mind off work completely.

Band 9 phrases: it depends on my mood · throw something together · take my time over · there's something therapeutic about it · takes my mind off
Band 9Part 2

"Describe a place you like to relax."

The place I'd choose is a little cafe just around the corner from my flat. I've been going there for as long as I can remember, usually on a Sunday morning when it's still fairly quiet. What I love about it is that it strikes the perfect balance — it's lively enough to feel alive, but never so busy that you can't hear yourself think. I'll typically grab a coffee, settle into a corner and just watch the world go by. To be honest, it's become a bit of a ritual, and on the rare weekend I miss it, I genuinely feel like something's off. It's not the coffee, really — it's the headspace it gives me.

Band 9 phrases: for as long as I can remember · strikes the perfect balance · hear yourself think · settle into a corner · watch the world go by · something's off
Band 9Part 3

"Why do people find it hard to relax these days?"

That's a really good question. I think a big part of it comes down to the fact that we're permanently connected — our phones blur the line between work and rest, so we never fully switch off. On top of that, there's this growing pressure to be productive every waking minute, which means even our downtime can start to feel like another task. Having said that, I do think people are gradually waking up to it — things like digital detoxes and mindfulness suggest we're starting to push back against that always-on culture.

Band 9 phrases: comes down to · permanently connected · switch off · on top of that · having said that · push back against

Questions

Band 9 speaking, answered.

What is a Band 9 in IELTS speaking?

Band 9 is the top score. It means you speak fluently and effortlessly, use a wide range of vocabulary naturally and precisely, handle grammar with full flexibility, and are easy to understand throughout. It doesn't mean "perfect" or "native" — occasional slips are fine as long as your communication is fully effective.

Should I memorise Band 9 sample answers?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised, scripted answers and will mark them down. Use these samples to learn the patterns, phrases and structures — then practise saying your own answers spontaneously. The phrases are tools to reuse, not a script to recite.

How do I get Band 9 in IELTS speaking?

Speak a lot, get feedback, and fix one weakness at a time. Focus on fluency first (no long pauses), then widen your vocabulary with natural collocations, then stretch your grammar. The fastest route is daily speaking practice with instant feedback so you can see exactly which of the four criteria is holding you back.
